Screen-film mammography remains an effective tool for detecting breast cancer.

With advancements in breast cancer diagnostic technology, many breast centers now offer you a choice when you get your mammogram: a 2D or a 3D mammogram, also called tomosynthesis. Both types use a low-dose X-ray to examine the breast, and they release about the same amount of radiation.

Both use X-ray radiation to produce an image of the breast, but conventional mammograms are read and stored on film, where digital mammograms are read and stored in a computer so the data can be enhanced, magnified, or manipulated for further evaluation. There are no other differences between the two.

The effectiveness of screen-film mammography is limited by its narrow dynamic range, low contrast resolution, image noise, and film processing artifacts that contribute to a known false-negative rate of up to 10% in the detection of breast cancer [4, 5].

A breast ultrasound is most often done to find out if a problem found by a mammogram or physical exam of the breast may be a cyst filled with fluid or a solid tumor. Breast ultrasound is not usually done to screen for breast cancer. This is because it may miss some early signs of cancer.

ma-MAH-gruh-fee) A procedure that uses x-rays to take pictures of the inside of the breast and stores the images on x-ray film. Film mammography may be used to check for breast cancer and other changes in the breast, such as abnormal lumps, cysts, or calcifications (calcium deposits).

DBT, also known as 3D mammography, is emerging as the new gold standard in mammography.
