In general, enteral nutrition is preferred to parenteral nutrition as it is more physiological, simpler, cheaper and less complicated. However even nasogastric feeding needs care and the more complex types of enteral nutrition such as gastrostomy and jejunostomy need significant interventions.

EN is variably defined, but in general, it provides nourishment into the gut, and may include diet, oral supplementation, and feeding via a tube. For this analysis, the studies reported include patients being fed by tube, except when noted otherwise. PN includes nourishment by central and peripheral veins.

As the names imply, PPN is generally used for patients who need supplementary nutrition, while TPN is for patients who require all of their dietary needs replaced.

Enteral nutrition (EN) provides critical macro and micronutrients to individuals who cannot maintain sufficient oral intake to meet their nutritional needs. EN is most commonly required for neurological conditions that impair swallow function, such as stroke, amytrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease.

TPN is given intravenously, directly into the bloodstream of a patient. Unlike TPN, tube feeding is given by inserting a feeding tube into the patient's nose, mouth, or digestive system (such as the stomach or small intestine).

Patients receiving TPN must be closely monitored. Glucose should be monitored several times a day until stable, and then at least daily. Intake and output as well as weight should also be monitored daily.

Peripheral Parenteral Nutrition (PPN) As a result, PPN solutions generally provide significantly fewer calories than TPN solutions. PPN is prescribed for short-term nutritional support, usually for 2 weeks or less.
