The flagella are long, whip-like structures that move back and forth to create a flow of current through the sponge body. Once bacteria and other food particles have been trapped by the ciliated collar, the choanocytes engulf them and digest them.

Inside the sponge, tiny hairlike structures called flagella create currents to filter bacteria out of the sponge's cells and trap food within them.

The scientists believe the sponges sink their spicules into the ground and pull on them to haul their bodies forward. As the animals move ahead, the embedded spicules rip off their bodies, and a trail of skeletal fragments and fleshy bits forms behind. (You can see a zig-zagging spicule trail in the image above.)

The layer that lines the central cavity is made of collar cells. Collar cells have whiplike structures that beat back and forth to move water through the sponge. Collar cells also strain food from the water. The collar cells act as the sponge's digestive system.

Water is pumped directly through pores, called ostia, into the spongocoel and then out of the sponge through an opening called the osculum (plural oscula). The spongocoel is lined with specialized digestive cells called choanocytes that filter and take in food.

The "skeleton" of the sponge is composed of tiny needle-like splinters called spicules, a mesh of protein called spongin, or a combination of both.
