Compensatory Education refers to the “compensation” of a student for special education services not provided by a school district. The amount of compensation is typically calculated as a number of hours. A student's IEP works a bit like a contract between the student and a school district.

Compensatory education is a type of educational program designed to help make up for any educational deprivation that students may have experienced due to their disability.

Compensatory education focuses on the individual student and the living and learning environment in which the student interacts. Proponents of this approach charge that environmental conditions, often induced by poverty, are responsible for poor academic achievement of students.

Compensatory damages are designed to compensate plaintiffs for the actual losses they've experienced. This type of award can be to reimburse them for medical treatments, medical bills, or any future expenses they may have due to an injury they sustained due to the negligence of another person or entity.

For example, if your child's IEP says she should get 60 minutes per week of speech therapy, and she gets no speech therapy for three weeks, your child should get 180 extra minutes (60 minutes per week times three weeks) of speech therapy to make up for that time she missed. This is compensatory special education.

The purpose of the Compensatory Education program is to meet the educational needs of economically disadvantaged children and children in local institutions for neglected or delinquent children.

Compensatory education (comp ed) is the way that districts can provide extra services and supports when they have not provided them as they should have in the IEP.
