Welcome to Ingonyama Trust Board The mandate of the Trust is to hold all this land for the “benefit, material welfare and social well-being of the members of the tribes and communities” living on the land. The sole trustee to land under Ingonyama Trust is His Majesty the King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.

Tenure reform and customary land rights The court characterises these land rights in the following terms: land is allotted to a family head as residential and arable plots and access to communal pasture; no financial payments are involved, and land rights are inheritable.

The dynasty is Christian and practices polygamy, agnates of the dynasty bearing the prefix "Prince/Princess" and the surname "Zulu", while holding the rank of KaBhekuZulu, (i.e. prince of the Blood).

The Trust was formed by an Act of the legislature of the then self-governing territory (Bantustan) of KwaZulu, as a last attempt at controlling previously black-owned land at a convenient arms-length, in the dying days of the era of segregation. Ingonyama means leopard in Zulu.
