An independent reading level is the level at which a child can read a text on his/her own with ease. The child makes hardly any errors when reading the text and has excellent comprehension of the story. The child can read the story alone with confidence.

A student's instructional reading level is defined as the highest level at which the student has scored >=90% accuracy and >=60% comprehension. Meeting this score threshold can also be considered "passing" the level.

At school, this is the level of text students will read during small group or one-on-one instruction. The independent level is the level of text students can read on their own. Typically, but not always, a student's independent level is one level lower than their instructional level.

FRUSTRATIONAL LEVEL: text in which more than 1 in 10 words are too difficult for the reader. Frustrational-level texts can be used when extensive support and instruction are provided by the teacher during one-on-one instruction.

To complete a running record, a child will read aloud a text that the teacher estimates to be at their independent level. While the child reads, the teacher takes notes on the accuracy of the reading and marks down any deviations from the original text using a standard coding system.

Usually, your child's teacher will determine their Lexile reading level and then choose books that have a matching score. The Lexile score, or measure, describes a child's reading ability and matches them with books and other reading materials. This measure ranges anywhere from 0L to 2000L.

percentages (i.e., 95% or higher = independent level; 90%–94% = instructional; below 90% = frustrational); in the above example, the student would be at an instructional reading level (94% falls in the 90% to 94% range).

INDEPENDENT LEVEL: text in which no more than approximately 1 in 20 words is difficult for the reader. Independent-level texts are appropriate if students are reading independently with little or no instructional support. Independent-level texts are often used to build fluency.
