People with ASD often have problems with social communication and interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention. It is important to note that some people without ASD might also have some of these symptoms.

We develop a profile of the way Autism impacts each person. This highlights their strengths as well as the areas where support is needed. Our Autism profile summaries the diagnostic criteria and creates a picture that is both Autism focused and person-centred specific.

A one-page profile gives a shared understanding about the child, built from the knowledge of the child, the family and friends and teaching staff. They give parents an opportunity to share their learning and expertise on what good support means for their child, and what is important to them.

Autistic children have communication difficulties, narrow interests and repetitive behaviour. Early signs of autism might include lack of interest in other people, including lack of eye contact. Autism can be diagnosed in some children from around 18 months of age.

These profiles are included under the Pervasive Developmental Disorders heading, defined as "A group of disorders characterized by qualitative abnormalities in reciprocal social interactions and in patterns of communication, and by a restricted, stereotyped, repetitive repertoire of interests and activities.

While many have used and continue to use the term "person with autism" because they find it more polite or respectful, it is widely accepted that people who have received an autism diagnosis prefer to be referred to as an "autistic person."

Write down what social skills the person has, their strengths and needs. This might be basic skills such as turn taking, communicating 'Hi' and 'Bye', knowing private vs public behaviour. Or complex skills such having 'to and fro' conversations or maintaining friendships.
