Echinoderms - Fertilization Sea urchin sperm can be obtained in large quantities, because sea urchins, like many marine invertebrates, engage in broadcast spawning, i.e., they release large quantities of gametes into the sea water. Undiluted semen contains a large quantity of sperm - as many as 1010 - 1011 cells/ml!

Sperm usually consist of two morphologically and functionally distinct regions enclosed by a single plasma membrane: the tail, which propels the sperm to the egg and helps it to burrow through the egg coat, and the head, which contains a condensed haploid nucleus (Figure 20-25).

Fertilization is external. To prevent the sperm and eggs from being washed away and diluted, sea urchins have evolved mechanisms to bring the gametes together, including synchronizing spawning and chemotaxis of the sperm towards the egg (Gilbert, 6th edition, Figure 7.9).

Spawning can be induced in adult sea urchins by injecting 1 ml of a 0.5M KCl solution into several sites in the soft membrane around the mouth. Within minutes, the gametes should appear: the sperm are off-white, the eggs are tan to orange.

Uni is the Japanese word for sea urchin, more specifically, the sea urchin's gonads. The gonad is actually the male or female organ, more specifically, the sex glands, responsible for producing sperm or eggs.

Sea urchins reproduce by sending clouds of eggs and sperm into the water. Millions of larvae are formed, but only a handful make it back to the shoreline to grow into adults.

Urchins are broadcast spawners with external fertilization and aggregate during spawning. Female urchins may produce 100,000 to 2,000,000 eggs into the sea where they are fertilized.

The sea urchin egg is 10,000 times bigger than the sperm (Fig. 7.4). It is covered with the jelly coat and the vitelline "membrane", a protein "shell" just outside the plasma membrane. The vitelline membrane contains proteins that bind to sperm of the same species.
