Comparing to a reference voltage allows us to detect events such as plugging in or unplugging a signal. A very common example is detecting when a headset has been plugged into an audio device. Fig. 5.43 shows a circuit used to detect when external devices are plugged into a headphone port [1].

The reference voltage generator is an important circuitry block in pipelined analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The function of the reference generator is to provide accurate reference voltages to the ADC which are compared to the unknown input signal in order to convert analog data into digital.

A voltage reference is a precision device specifically designed to maintain a constant output voltage, even as parameters such as ambient temperature or supply voltage change. The precision of a voltage reference enables its use in several differ- ent types of applications beyond a data converter.

A voltage reference is usually based on a bandgap reference circuit, as are most voltage regulators. While you could use a zener diode, the output impedance can be 100 ohms or more depending on the zener voltage and current used.
