Computer ownership among students remained close to universal with 96.5% owning laptops and 14.9% owning desktops. Only 3 students (1.5%) reported they didn't own a computer. Smartphone ownership remains close to universal (98.5%).

Students have ever increasing access to a variety of smart devices. Smartphones and Laptop PCs remain the devices that most students have access to (93%). This has been the case since we started the surveys three years ago with little indication of any change to these device preferences.

Ninety-five percent of respondents have access to a smartphone (of whom 99% own them personally), and 91% have access to a laptop (of whom 97% own them personally). Nearly all respondents reported owning at least two internet-capable devices.

Use of Technology Students reported using computers for writing documents (99.5 percent) and e-mails (99.5 percent), followed by surfing the Internet for pleasure (97.2 percent) and for classroom activities (96.4 percent).

Today, 88 percent of college students said they own a laptop and 85 percent said they own a smartphone. The poll was conducted over a month this past spring. Just over 1,200 college students from around the United States were surveyed. The full report is available at the Pearson site.
