Daily Oral Language is a comprehensive guide for third- through fifth-grade teachers to prepare readers and writers with grammar, editing, and vocabulary skills and familiarize students with standardized test-taking practices.

Most teachers are familiar with Daily Oral Language, abbreviated as D.O.L. or under the guise of similar acronyms.

Demonstrations of Learning (DOL)

What is a DOL? A learning objective is a specific, result statement of what the learner will know, understand, and/or accomplish following a learning activity. The DOL is the tool/assessment teachers use to determine whether students have accomplished the LO.

The premise behind Daily Oral Language (D.O.L. from here on in) is that it gives students a chance to practice their spelling, sentence writing skills, and their knowledge of the use of conventions - including punctuation, capitilization, and rules of grammar.

DOL means "Dying Of Laughter." In the same way that terms such as ALOL ("Actually Laughing Out Loud") and LLOL ("Literally LOL") have emerged to differentiate between a LOL for tone and genuine laughter, the term DOL, meaning "Dying of Laughter" has emerged. DOL usually indicates that the writer is really laughing.

The basic lesson plan outline given below contains the direct instruction element: 1) objectives, 2) standards, 3) anticipatory set, 4) teaching [input, modeling, and check for understanding], 5) guided practice, 6) closure, and 7) independent practice.

The Research Shows: Pro Daily Oral Language – Regular skills practice improves skill retention and communicates to students that the skills that they are developing are important. Continuous review has proven to be an effective way to maintain skills and develop an understanding of critical concepts.
