The specific names of the FIFO functions are as follows: SCFIFO: single-clock FIFO. DCFIFO: dual-clock FIFO (supports same port widths for input and output data) DCFIFO_MIXED_WIDTHS: dual-clock FIFO (supports different port widths for input and output data)

This dual clock FIFO is designed as a way for two circuits operating in different clock frequencies to communicate with each other. There is a read side and write side where data is stored into the internal memory of the FIFO using the write side clock and then read from the internal memory using the read side clock.

A FIFO is a special type of buffer. The name FIFO stands for first in first out and means that the data written into the buffer first comes out of it first. There are other kinds of buffers like the LIFO (last in first out), often called a stack memory, and the shared memory.

The FPGA FIFO is a memory element with a simple concept: One part of the application logic writes data words on one side of the FIFO. On the other side of the FIFO, another part of application logic reads these words from it, in the same order (FIFO = First In First Out). This data is stored inside the FIFO.

In a Synchronous FIFO, the write and read to the FIFO happen on a single clock. This means in Synchronous FIFO, either write or read can happen at a single time (on single clock) while in the case of an Asynchronous FIFO, read and write can happen simultaneously (Separate clocks for write and read).

Renesas synchronous FIFOs are typically used for synchronization of CPU and other computer hardware. FIFOs are generally implemented as a circular queue, and thus have a read and write pointer. Synchronous FIFOs use clocks for reading and writing, while asynchronous FIFOs are usually controlled by asynchronous signals.
