Under a format that has remained largely unchanged since 1982, 32 players reach the Crucible each year; the top 16 players in the world rankings qualify automatically, while another 16 players win places through a qualification tournament.

To compete on the World Snooker Tour as a professional player, a player must qualify for it. At the end of each season, a pre-determined number of players are relegated from the tour based on their performance in ranking tournaments and on the secondary tour, making way for new professionals to join the tour.

Snooker players have to pay their own travel and accommodation costs to go to tournaments. Looking at the two-year ranking list only 63 players have won over £35,000 averaged over the two years, minus expenses that probably means they made a net profit of about £30,000.

The World Snooker Championship is the longest-running and most prestigious tournament in professional snooker. It is also the richest, with total prize money in 2022 of £2,395,000, including £500,000 for the winner.

Prize fund The event featured a prize pool of £385,000 with the winner receiving £125,000.

In the first round of a snooker tournament, the matches are played over eleven frames (so the first player to win six frames wins the match). In the later rounds matches are played over 15 frames. Assume that each player has steady nerves and his chance of winning any frame (irrespective of who starts) is constant.
