Form 990-N is submitted electronically, there are no paper forms. An organization eligible to submit Form 990-N can instead choose to file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ to satisfy its annual reporting requirement.

You cannot use Form 8868 to extend the due date of Form 990-N. An organization will only be allowed an extension of 6 months for a return for a tax year. File Form 8868 by the due date of the return for which you are requesting an extension.

There is no penalty for late submissions. While there is no penalty assessment for filing Form 990-N late, organizations that fail to file required Forms 990, 990-EZ or 990-N for three consecutive years will automatically lose their tax-exempt status.

What happens if I fail to file Form 990-N (or Form 990 or Form 990-EZ)? An organization that fails to file the required e-Postcard (or annual return) for three consecutive tax years automatically loses its tax-exempt status.

There will be no usage fee charged to file the 990-EZ for organizations with gross receipts less than $100,000. To e-file a prior year 900-EZ, please login or register on our Home page. Form 990-N can be filed for free at IRS.gov. There is no paper form.

The IRS will send you a reminder notice if you do not file your Form 990-N (e-Postcard) on time, but you will not be assessed a penalty for late filing an e-Postcard. However, it is critical that you file within the three-year period described above or your organization may lose its tax-exempt status.
