ADIs may work as part of a driving school or run their business independently. PDI, on the other hand, is short for Potential Driving Instructor. Though that sounds rather vague, it actually only refers to someone who has applied, been accepted and started training to become an ADI.

Apply to become a driving instructor Before you can begin training to become a driving instructor, you must first register with the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). To do this you must be over 21 years old and have held a driving licence for over three years, without holding any motoring convictions.

Based on a 35-hour week, working 48 weeks per year and charging £33 per hour, a driving instructor can expect to take home around £31,000 per year, after tax, national insurance and other fees.
