What is a TCU assessment?

TCU Drug Screen 5 is an updated version of the TCU Drug Screen II and is based on the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The TCU Drug Screen 5 screens for mild to severe substance use disorder, and is particularly useful when determining placement and level of care in treatment.

The TCU Drug Screen is scored to produce a single total score which can range from 9 to 18. Score values of 6 or greater indicate relatively severe drug-related problems, and correspond approximately to DSM drug dependence diagnosis.

For example, risk assessments are used pretrial to inform decisions about release pending adjudication or jail detention. Risk assessments are also used by correctional departments to determine the appropriate programming for incarcerated individuals.

TCU Criminal History Risk Assessment (TCU CRHSForm) contains 22 items focused on previous arrests, convictions, and incarcerations (see Hoffman & Beck, 1974, Journal of Criminal Justice; Joe, Simpson, Greener, & Rowan-Szal, 2004).

The TCU CTS was initially developed for the evaluation of cognitive-oriented substance use treatment programs. The TCU CTS includes the following six scales: Entitlement (EN), Justification (JU), Criminal Rationalization (CN) Personal Irresponsibility (PI), Power Orientation (PO) and Coldheartedness (CH).
