Backflow testing is an important procedure to discover out how best to prevent contamination in your water supply. A proper test can identify the type and location of backflow preventer to help keep your fresh water clean.

Be discolored, brown, yellow or even pink in color. Have a bad Sulphur smell. Water flow could be slow and / or interrupted. You may visibly see rust particles or sediment in the water. The water could have a bad taste.

How often does my backflow preventer need to be tested? Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) assembly needs to be tested annually and rebuilt every 5 years. Double Check Valve (DCV) assembly needs to be tested every 3 years.

As required by California State Law: Title 17, Article 2 section 7605, subsection c; Backflow preventers shall be tested at least annually or more frequently if determined to be necessary by the health agency or water supplier. Your water provider is required to supply you with drinkable water.

You can check to see if you have a backflow prevention assembly by looking at where water enters your property (usually in a basement by the water heater, a crawl space, or in a mechanical room).

With proper maintenance and annual testing, backflow prevention assemblies can last for many years. But mechanical backflow prevention assemblies have internal seals, springs, and moving parts that are subject to clogging, wear or fatigue.

In backflow testing, a plumber assesses how well backflow preventers are working. Backflow preventers are devices within the plumbing system that keep the flow of water moving in the proper direction. They act as barriers to prevent harmful contaminants from entering a community's potable water supply.

They must not only be tested annually, but rebuilt every five years. If not, there could be serious harmful backflow. If you discover anything amiss in the testing of the backflow preventer, it is a good idea to handle it right then.

The testing process involves using valves on the backflow testing device, known as gate and relief valves. Essentially the plumber will be closing valves and checking for changes in gauge movement, water leaks and other clear signs. There are specific criteria that needs to be met during the testing process.
