Asbestos-containing materials are simply materials that contain any type of asbestos.

OSHA: The legal airborne permissible exposure limit (PEL) is 0.1 fiber/cc (fiber per cubic centimeter) averaged over an 8-hour workshift and 1 fiber/cc, not to be exceeded during any 30-minute work period.

It requires the person who has the duty (ie the 'dutyholder') to: take reasonable steps to find out if there are materials containing asbestos in non-domestic premises, and if so, its amount, where it is and what condition it is in. presume materials contain asbestos unless there is strong evidence that they do not.

The regulations require the owner of the building or the operator to notify the appropriate state agency before any demolition, or before any renovations of buildings that could contain a certain threshold amount of asbestos or asbestos-containing material.

Its purpose is to establish the presence and extent of any asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in the building which could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, maintenance or new installations, and to assess its condition. It may involve minor intrusive work and some disturbance.

On July 12, 1989, EPA issued a final rule under Section 6 of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) banning most asbestos-containing products in the United States.

Asbestos was used extensively in home construction from the early 1940s through the 1970s as highly-effective and inexpensive fire-retardant material and thermal and acoustic insulator. It is now known that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to lung disease.

An asbestos inspection is when an individual inspects a building or facility for the presence or location of asbestos-containing material (ACM) or suspected ACM. ACM is defined as material that contains greater than 1% asbestos.

Common materials that may contain asbestos Loose asbestos in ceiling or floor cavity. Lagging. Sprayed coatings on ceilings, walls and beams/columns. Asbestos insulating board. Floortiles, textiles and composites. Textured coatings. Asbestos cement products. Roofing felt.

Something is an ACM if it contains more than one percent asbestos, as determined by a testing method called Polarized Light Microscopy. When dry, an ACM is considered friable if it can be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure. If it can't, it's considered non-friable ACM.
