Double elimination brackets are broken up into a winners bracket and a losers bracket, with the winner of the loser's bracket playing the winner of the winner's bracket for first place. Losers of matches in the winners bracket dropdown into a spot and play another loser to see who advances in the loser's bracket.

The maximum number of games in a double-elimination tournament is one less than twice the number of teams participating (e.g., 8 teams 15 games). The minimum number is two less than twice the number of teams (e.g., 8 teams 14 games).

When there are only two different conferences, there are two sides of the bracket. One conference is on one side, while the other is on the opposite side. Each side is organized according to a team's seeding; higher-seeded teams are matched against lower-seeded teams.

With each team allowed only up to two losses, the typical 6-team bracket has several rounds of games that is only completed with a single champion. Keep those standard double-elimination rules in mind after you've downloaded and printed out the bracket.

So the typical 10-team brackets has four rounds of games that end with a single champion. Nothing nuts there, but to make the tournament move smoothly, the top six seeds will have first round byes. While the four lowest seeds (#7-10) would have to play into the second round round.

In double elimination tournaments, teams are not eliminated from the tournament until their second loss. The way this is achieved is with a losers bracket. Everyone starts out on the top bracket, or winners bracket. After the first round, when half the teams lose, they drop down to the loser bracket.

To determine the number of matches use the formula, N=(cx2)-2. For example 17 participants/teams times 2 equals 34 minus 2 equals 32 matches. And there is a possibility there could be 33 matches if the loser bracket participant/team makes it to the final and beats the winner bracket participant/team twice.

So the typical 6-team brackets has three rounds of games that end with a single champion. Nothing nuts there, but to make the tournament move smoothly, the top six seeds will have first round byes. While the four lowest seeds (#4-6) would have to play into the second round round.
