Science of the Alpha Centauri system The two sunlike stars that make up Alpha Centauri are Rigil Kentaurus and Toliman. Rigil Kentaurus, also known as Alpha Centauri A, is a yellowish star, slightly more massive than the sun and about 1.5 times brighter.

A star called 18 Scorpii is a mirror image of our own sun Solar sibling. The faint star 18 Scorpii (arrow), near a "claw" in the constellation Scorpio, is virtually identical to our sun.

Rigil Kentaurus and Toliman (Alpha Centauri A and B) It is a sun-like star that, like Proxima Centauri, is still in its main sequence lifetime. Rigil Kentaraus is both larger and more massive than the sun, with a diameter 1.2 times that of the sun and a mass 1.1 times our star's.

To date no solar twin that exactly matches the Sun has been found. However, there are some stars that come very close to being identical to that of the Sun, and are such considered solar twins by members of the astronomical community.

Astronomers compare the true brightness of stars by calculating how they would look if viewed from a standard distance of 32.6 light years away. If the Sun were viewed from this distance it would appear over 300 times fainter than Sirius (the brightest star in our nighttime sky) appears to us on Earth.

Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has about 200 billion stars altogether and about 20 billion sunlike stars. If one in four sunlike stars has at least one Earth-sized planet, that's 5 billion such worlds in our galaxy alone!
