In the field of emergency medical services (EMS), there are different levels of certifications for providers. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are the most common type of providers in EMS and are sometimes referred to as EMTs.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is the system that provides emergency medical care through a system of coordinated response and emergency medical care. Along with emergency doctors and nurses, police officers and firefighters, EMT's and paramedics are trained professionals within the Emergency Medical Services system.

EMT services operate as a part of EMS. They provide a very specific service within the realm of EMS. EMS services encompass most first responder roles, including fire, EMT and police services. EMT professionals possess a very narrow professional scope compared to the much wider scope of EMS professionals.

EMT - Emergency Medical Technician To become an EMT in Texas you must: be 18 years old, have a High school diploma or GED, successfully complete an approved EMS training, submit a complete application with fee, pass the National Registry exam, and submit a background check.

Apart from a longer training time, the biggest difference between EMR and EMT professionals is that EMTs can transport patients. Giving patients medication before they get to the hospital can save their lives as well. While EMTs are authorized to do that, EMRs are not.

The basic difference between EMTs and paramedics lies in their level of education and the kind of procedures they are allowed to perform. While EMTs can administer CPR, glucose, and oxygen, paramedics can perform more complex procedures such as inserting IV lines, administering drugs, and applying pacemakers.

Requirements You must be at least 18 years old. Have a high school diploma or GED certificate. Successfully complete a DSHS approved EMS training course. Submit a completed EMS Personnel Certification application and fee. Pass the National Registry exam. Submit fingerprints for Texas/FBI criminal history check.

Respond to 911 calls for emergency medical assistance, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or bandaging a wound. Assess a patient's condition and determine a course of treatment. Provide first-aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured patients. Transport patients safely in an ambulance.

Differences between EMT, Paramedic and AS in EMS They are trained to provide basic life support of patients and work alongside Paramedics in emergency situations. EMTs are trained to give CPR, administer glucose to diabetic patients, give oxygen, bandage wounds and assist Paramedics in more advanced procedures.
