Today, the Chickasaw Nation is economically strong, culturally vibrant and full of energetic people dedicated to the preservation of family, community and heritage.

Many Chickasaws became successful farmers and ranchers. Chickasaws built some of the first schools, banks, and businesses in Indian Territory. After Oklahoma statehood in 1907, the President of the United States appointed the principal officers of the Chickasaw Nation.

Mixed-bloods dominated the new government; as slaveholders and commercial farmers they dominated the economic resurgence prior to 1861. Cotton, corn, and other grains became the principal crops, but Chickasaw farmers also used their prairie lands for stock raising, including horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, and goats.

Chickasaw Nation pays an average hourly rate of $108 and hourly wages range from a low of $93 to a high of $126.

Corn has long been a staple of the Chickasaw diet. Corn grew across the Chickasaw Homeland, in the Southeastern United States, and Chickasaws long ago began to domesticate it as a crop. They planted vast fields around households, tending the crops and harvesting together.

Continued success has enabled the tribe to invest in new ventures. The Chickasaw Nation's annual economic impact in the state of Oklahoma is $5.5 billion, supporting more than 34,400 jobs and $1.8 billion in wages and benefits.

Honor cords are used to recognize Chickasaw students during high school graduation ceremonies. Braided in yellow, purple and blue rope, the honor cords feature a medallion displaying the Great Seal of the Chickasaw Nation.
