You can locate your EIN on your confirmation letter from the IRS, old tax returns, old business loan applications, your business credit report, or payroll paperwork. You can also call the IRS to look up your federal tax ID number. If you need to locate another company's EIN, you can start by asking the company.

If you lost your EIN documents, you can visit the IRS website where you can get a copy of your EIN number.

This isn't a big deal for concern though, it just means the IRS needs to manually review your filing and you have to apply with Form SS-4. Solution: File Form SS-4 by mail or by fax as the IRS will need to manually review your EIN application.

Simply call (800) 829-4933 and select EIN from the list of options. Once connected with an IRS employee, tell the assistor you received an EIN from the Internet but can't remember it. The IRS employee will ask the necessary disclosure and security questions prior to providing the number.

Unfortunately, looking up your EIN on IRS.gov isn't an option, as there's no EIN lookup tool. Still, that doesn't mean you're entirely out of luck. You can find it on the official IRS notice you received when it was issued, call the IRS directly or locate your EIN on business documents.

Your previously filed return should be notated with your EIN. Ask the IRS to search for your EIN by calling the Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933.

You can look up another business's EIN using the SEC's Edgar system, as long as the business is a public company. To verify a charitable organization's EIN, you could check the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search tool. You may also be able to hire an online company to do the research on your behalf.
