After a fight with her cousin, John Reed, Jane is imprisoned in the red-room as a punishment. Jane is terrified of being left in the red-room because it is supposedly haunted by the ghost of her dead uncle.

The novel can be seen as a journey of Jane finding her true self. Jane fights convention by resisting the male dominance, on her quest for identity and independence she remains true to herself by putting herself first and caring for her own wellbeing, even though she is longing for love and kinship.

In Jane Eyre, Jane goes on a journey of personal discovery and finds out who she is, both in terms of her own identity and personality, and how she can find her own happiness. She is a true heroine and many readers rejoice in Jane's story and how she conquers Victorian society by pursuing her own happiness.

Jane felt that the room was haunted and was scarred from this experience for the rest of her life. When writing this scene, Jane insisted she be seen staying calm and strong. She wanted this scene to feel like she was leveling up.

Jane Eyre is considered a feminist work because it shows a heroine who is independent, from the working-class, and unmarried. Jane gains money and power by the end of the novel, which allows her to enter marriage on her terms on equal standing with Rochester.

Suddenly, Jane feels a presence in the room and imagines it might be Mr. Reed, returning to earth to avenge his wife's violation of his last wish. She screams and the servants come running into the room. Jane begs to be removed from the red-room, but neither the servants nor Mrs.

In the red-room, Jane's position of exile and imprisonment first becomes clear. Although Jane is eventually freed from the room, she continues to be socially ostracized, financially trapped, and excluded from love; her sense of independence and her freedom of self-expression are constantly threatened.

This dream of the Red Room serves to remind Jane of the lesson that she learned when she was a child - that women who act outside of societal norms will be punished by being placed outside of society.
