Leg, ankle and knee injuries are some of the most commonly recognized disabilities for Social Security Disability Benefits.

Chronic ankle instability is a condition characterized by a recurring giving way of the outer (lateral) side of the ankle. This condition often develops after repeated ankle sprains. Usually, the giving way occurs while walking or doing other activities, but it can also happen when you're just standing.

Grade 1 Sprain: Slight stretching and some damage to the fibers (fibrils) of the ligament. Grade 2 Sprain: Partial tearing of the ligament. If the ankle joint is examined and moved in certain ways, abnormal looseness (laxity) of the ankle joint occurs. Grade 3 Sprain: Complete tear of the ligament.

The Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) is a self-report outcome instrument developed to assess physical function for individuals with foot and ankle related impairments. This self-report outcome instrument is available in English, German, French and Persian.

The original study established a cutoff score of ≤ 27, however, recent literature suggests that a cutoff score of ≤25 results in improved test characteristics, thus, enhancing the accuracy of the tool in differentiating individuals with and without chronic ankle instability.

Grade I: Mild impairment - Minimal swelling and tenderness with little impact on function. Grade II: Moderate impairment - Moderate swelling, pain and tenderness with decreased range of motion and ankle instability. Grade III: Severe impairment - Significant swelling, tenderness, loss of function and marked instability.

Clinicians commonly use the anterior draw test (ligament laxity) and distal fibular position (lateral malleolus displacement), to measure ankle instability.

The FADI is scored out of 104, with a score of 0 indicating maximum disability and a score of 104 indicating no disability. The total FADI score corresponds to the sum of Activity and Pain subscale scores (maximum score of 88 for Activity and 16 for Pain).
