Environmental factors favorable for native freshwater mussels include a forested buffer along the streambanks and a gravel streambed with a moderate cover of silt.

Unionids were once an important source of food for Native Americans. However due to PCBs, heavy metals, and other contaminants, they are generally no longer edible. Freshwater mussels are one of the most endangered groups of animals in North America.

One obvious difference between freshwater and marine mussels is that freshwater mussels live in freshwater streams, rivers, ponds and lakes while marine mussels live in salt water oceans and bays.

Although most species are edible, freshwater mussels are not as tasty as their saltwater relatives. In addition, since they are long-lived filter feeders, pollutants can easily settle and build up inside them, making them distasteful and potentially unhealthy for human consumption.

Freshwater mussels are edible, too, but preparation and cooking is required.

Unfortunately, for all their allure, freshwater mussels are the most endangered group of organisms in the United States. Water pollution has wreaked havoc on these clean-water-loving animals, and dams have deteriorated water quality and separated mussels from the host fish on which their survival depends.

However, the word “mussel” (as well as “clam” and “bivalve”) describes a wide variety of native, two-shelled creatures. Native mussels live their lives quietly and mostly unnoticed in the bottom sediments of lakes and streams throughout Michigan.

HABITAT: Freshwater mussels live on river bottoms and most require clean, flowing water to survive and reproduce. RANGE: Worldwide, there are an estimated 1,000 species of freshwater mussels, about one-third of which occur in the United States.
