In Ohio, citizens can openly carry a gun. You do not need a conceal carry permit to carry a gun unless they are prohibited in that location. As of June 2023, if you are 21 years old and eligible (see below), you can also conceal your gun without a conceal carry permit.

The constitution lays the framework for state government and outlines rights for the people of Ohio. The current constitution is the third Ohio has had since gaining statehood in 1803. A constitutional convention held in 1850 and 1851 drafted a constitution which Ohio voters approved on June 17, 1851.

All men are, by nature, free and independent, and have certain inalienable rights, among which are those of enjoying and defending life and liberty, acquiring, possessing, and protecting property, and seeking and obtaining happiness and safety. All political power is inherent in the people.

We, the people of the State of Ohio, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, to secure its blessings and promote our common welfare, do establish this Constitution.

As of June 13, 2022, anyone 21-years-of-age or older who is not prohibited from firearm possession under state and federal law, and meets the definition of a “qualifying adult,” may carry a firearm in public without a permit or background check.

Per ORC, it is legal to discharge firearms on private property in Ohio's Townships if discharging the firearm(s) is done in a safe and legal manner and that the person(s) discharging the firearm is the landowner or someone to whom the landowner has given permission.

Ohio law acknowledges the right to bear arms, but there are some regulations regarding the possession, use, and sale of firearms and ammunition.

(1) The possession, transporting, or carrying of firearms, their components, their ammunition, or knives include, but are not limited to, the possession, transporting, or carrying, openly or concealed on a person's person or concealed ready at hand, of firearms, their components, their ammunition, or knives.

Do I have to register my firearms in Ohio? No. There is no “Gun Registry” anywhere in the state of Ohio. In fact, under Ohio Revised Code 9.68 local governmental bodies are not authorized to institute a gun registry in contradiction of state law.
