Antenna arrays are composed of group of similar antenna elements. The “grouping” of antennas increase the gain compared to a single element antenna. At the same the radiated power is more concentrated to one certain direction. This is due to reduced beam-width compared to the single element antenna.

Explanation: The progressive phase shift of the end-fire array is 180°. It is a linear array whose direction of radiation is along the axis of the array. For a broadside array it is 0°.

Arrays can be used to achieve higher gain, to give path diversity (also called MIMO) which increases communication reliability, to cancel interference from specific directions, to steer the radio beam electronically to point in different directions, and for radio direction finding (RDF).

End-fire array: The physical arrangement of an end-fire array is the same as that of the broad-side array. The magnitudes of currents in each element is the same, but there is a phase difference between these currents. Here δ = ± βd, the phase difference between dipoles.

Arrays can be used to achieve higher gain, to give path diversity (also called MIMO) which increases communication reliability, to cancel interference from specific directions, to steer the radio beam electronically to point in different directions, and for radio direction finding (RDF).

A broadside array consists number of identical antennas placed parallel to each other along a straight line. This straight line is perpendicular to the axis of individual antenna. It is known as axis of antenna array. Thus each element is perpendicular to the axis of antenna array.

Features such as shaped antenna patterns, dynamic range, beam control, high gain, high directivity, in-band linearity, adaptive interference cancellation, and angle-measurement accuracy make phased array antennas suitable for radar applications.

The point source is an example of isotropic radiator. However, this isotropic radiation is practically impossible, because every antenna radiates its energy with some directivity. The isotropic radiation is nothing but Omni-directional radiation.

The array factor consists of orientation and separation information of point sources while the element factor gives the radiation characteristic of given antenna element. The antenna radiation pattern can be calculated by multiplying the array factor with the element factor of given antenna [1].
