Texas PTDE is for students who live in the state and are ages 14 to 17. If you're 18 or older, you can take Texas 6 hour driving course for adults, which is a much shorter course that doesn't include the supervised driving practice requirement.

To apply for a DET instructor license an individual must complete and master Driver Education I, II, and III (nine semester hours – one semester hour is equivalent to 15 clock hours); hold a current Texas Teaching Certificate; and provide evidence of passing the Excet or Tecat exam.

About Texas Learner's Permit Teens and their parents are required to request state approval to participate in Parent-Taught Drivers Ed by completing a TDLR application. Once you have been approved, the TDLR will send you a Parent Taught Driver Ed Program Guide filled with information and forms.

Parent-taught driver education in Texas allows a parent, stepparent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian to teach their teenager how to drive. Parents and legal guardians may also designate an alternate instructor who must meet the same eligibility requirements.

Complete or partial hours may transfer to another driver education school, AMI, or a public-school hour-for- hour. If transferring to or from the parent taught driver education program, only the first 6 hours (Module 1) are transferable, no other partial classroom hours can be transferred.
