Leadership Rounding, a structured activity, whereby executive, nurse and/or department leaders intentionally and purposefully engage with staff (and patients!) to collect firsthand, actionable insights, is an important and effective strategy for cultivating and improving employee engagement.

The purpose of rounding is for managers to hear firsthand what is going well and what issues need to be addressed with the employee or on behalf of the employee. Rounding is a leadership practice where managers intentionally “makes the rounds” of all of. his or her employees on a regular basis.

Directions: Leadership rounding is a process where leaders (e.g., administrator, department heads, and nurse managers) are out in the building with staff and residents, talking with them directly about care and services provided in the organization including QAPI initiatives.

Leadership rounds should be consistent and engrained in the nurse leader's routine. Rounding on patients should occur daily, with all patients on the unit if possible. If the unit is a procedural area, the nurse leader may round at different times of day. Typically, rounds shouldn't exceed 15 minutes per patient.

Purposeful hourly rounding involves checking on the patient every hour during the day and every 2 hours overnight. It is intended to proactively address a patient's needs.

What is Leader Rounding? What is working well for you? Do you have what you need to do your job? Is there anything I can do to help you continue to perform well. Is there anyone who has been especially helpful to you?
