The Social Skills Rating Scale (SSRS) assesses social behaviors such as cooperation, empathy, assertion, self-control and responsibility by gathering information from the child, their parents and teachers.

For example, the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS; Gresham & Elliott, 1990) is a 55-item questionnaire that provides information about a child's social behavior in three domains (social skills, problem behaviors, and academic competence).

Weak social skills are commonly found in children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Non-verbal Learning Disability (NVLD), and Social Communication Disorder (SCD).

Scoring the Social Skills Questionnaire (Youth) Scores are rated from 0 (Not true), 1 (Sometimes true) to 2 (Mostly true) Although three factor scores can be derived (see Technical Manual listed above), normally the total score is used as the factors correlate significantly with each other.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents and caregivers use a 4-part strategy when helping their children develop social skills: Practice, Praise, Point out, and Prompt. These four steps can be used when adults notice that a child needs to work on a particular social skill.

Scoring generally takes approximately 5 minutes per questionnaire booklet. Each questionnaire contains 34 to 57 items that assess the individual's social behaviour. Each items uses a 3-point scale (i.e. 0 = Never, 1 = Sometimes, 2 = Very Often) to describe the individual's typical behaviour.
