VUK. Short for vertical up-kicker.

An Electromechanical (EM) pinball machine are amongst the first ever electrical ball amusement games ever produced. Unlike pinball machines of today which use complex computing systems and microchips, electromechanical pinball machines rely on countless numbers of switches, relays and miles of wire to operate.

They were first introduced on the 1947 Gottlieb game Humpty Dumpty, which had six flippers. Humpty Dumpty was an immediate success and sent other gamemakers into a frenzy to copy it.

1947 - The first pinball machine to to use ball "flippers" is seen in "Humpty Dumpty" by Gottlieb. 1948 - The first use of "active" or rebounding bumpers is introduced by Williams in "Rainbow". and also the first use of "ramps" on playfields ("Nine Sisters" from Williams Mfg.)

In 1947, Gottlieb's “Humpty Dumpty” completely revolutionized the industry by introducing the flipper. The game featured not two, but six, electrical flippers facing outward. Players could now use buttons on the side of the machine to keep the ball in play longer and increase their scores!

The first solid-state pinball is believed by some to be Mirco Games' The Spirit of '76 (1976), though the first mainstream solid-state game was Williams' Hot Tip (1977).

Gottlieb & Co invented flippers in 1947. The Humpty Dumpty was the very first pinball machine with flippers. The “Golden Age” of pinball lasted from 1948 until 1958.

Early pinball machines were built without flippers and didn't involve skill. Players launched balls onto the playfield and aimed for holes with various point values by bumping and tilting the machines. Because it was a game of chance, pinball was considered a form of gambling and was outlawed in the 1940s.
