The triage scale consists of 3 levels: category 1 (immediate), category 2 (urgent), and category 3 (non-urgent).

Category three is considered emergent, where there are no life-threatening disabilities, and treatment can be given within a certain set time. Category four is considered non-emergent. Based on the level of acuity, the triage nurses sort the patients into three distinct treatment areas.

The triage categories used in both systems are: Red (immediate evaluation by physician), Orange (emergent, evaluation within 15 min), Yellow (potentially unstable, evaluation within 60 min), Green (non-urgent, re-evaluation every 180 min), and Blue (minor injuries or complaints, re-evaluation every 240 min).

Triage Tags Red tag - immediate care is needed, life-threatening condition. Yellow tag - severe injuries or conditions exist that do require some immediate attention, but are not life-threatening. Green tag - attention due to injuries and conditions are required, but it does not need to be immediate; attention can wait.

Non-clinical (reception) staff are usually the first port of call for patients to access care in general practice. They make decisions about who receives an appointment that day, who needs immediate care, or who can wait until the next available appointment.

The injured people are placed in four urgent (red), emergency (yellow), delayed (green) and non-salvageable (black) classes.

Level 3- URGENT, for example, someone with pneumonia and difficulty breathing. Leve l 4-LESS URGENT, for example, someone with an earache or a minor cut requiring stitches. Level 5- NON URGENT, for example, someone with minor symptoms or needing a prescription renewal.
