The 2021 Gas Gathering final rule requires operators of all onshore gas gathering lines to report incidents and file annual reports under 49 CFR part 191, and this final rule provides for a new Type C regulated gathering line with certain regulatory compliance requirements defined in § 192.8.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (“PHMSA”) recently released the final rule in a rulemaking trilogy collectively known as the “Mega Rule” — a set of regulations designed to improve pipeline safety by reducing the frequency of pipeline failures.

The new Gas Mega Rule essentially doubles previous regulations for onshore gas transmission, with the goal of improving pipeline safety. With changing regulations for operations and increased requirements for reporting, oil & gas and engineering firms will need to ensure they are in complete compliance.

The Gas Transmission Final Rule focused on the actions an operator must take to reconfirm the maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) of previously untested natural gas transmission pipelines and pipelines lacking certain material or operational records.

Transmission pipeline systems transport natural gas thousands of miles across many parts of the continental United States. Natural gas distribution pipeline systems can be found in thousands of communities from coast to coast and distribute natural gas to our homes and businesses through mains and service lines.
