An old fakir placed a spell on the paw, so that it would grant three wishes but only with hellish consequences as punishment for tampering with fate. Morris, having had a horrible experience using the paw, throws it into the fire, but the sceptical Mr. White retrieves it.

The Monkey's Paw, classic tale of horror and superstition, a much-anthologized short story by W.W. Jacobs, published in 1902 in the collection The Lady of the Barge. The story centres on a dried, shrunken monkey's paw that is said to have the power to grant its possessor three wishes.

White's final wish, the fact that the moment he found the paw on the floor, he “frantically breathed his third and last wish and the knocking ceased suddenly,” implies that the father's last wish was for his son to return to where he now belongs.

“The Monkey's Paw” is W.W. Jacobs' most famous story and is considered to be a classic of horror fiction. It first appeared in Harper's Monthly magazine in 1902, and was reprinted in his third collection of short stories, The Lady of the Barge, also published in 1902.

He responded quietly and gravely when asked if he had been granted his wishes. His blotchy face whitened, and he threw the monkey's paw into the fire. The sergeant-major doesn't know what the first two wishes of the previous owner were, but the third wish was for death.

The Monkey's Paw is a legendary item of sinister intent that allowed whoever held it to obtain wishes, at a horrific price - being prone to twist the wishes in order to unleash the worst outcomes.

White. Mr. White is the elderly man who buys the monkey's paw and uses it to wish for two hundred pounds (British money) in order to pay off the loan on his house.

Monkey's Paw: The talisman symbolizes desire and greed, the evil that comes from tempting fate.
