The test is typically scored by measuring the deviation of the bisection from the true center of the line. A deviation toward the side of the brain lesion (unaffected side) is usually regarded as being indicative of neglect, although the magnitude of deviation can vary.

The Catherine Bergego Scale (CBS) is a scale to evaluates the impact of unilateral spatial neglect (USN) on everyday life of patients after stroke.

Unilateral neglect is usually caused by right hemisphere damage from stroke, leading to difficulties in attending to stimuli in the left perceptual hemifield. As an example, a patient suffering from neglect may read only the right part of a word or the right part of sentences, or eat only from the right side his plate.

Spatial neglect is commonly assessed clinically using either the line bisection or the target cancellation task. However, it is unclear whether poor performance on each of these two tasks is associated with the same or different lesion locations.

Hemispatial neglect results most commonly from strokes and brain unilateral injury to the right cerebral hemisphere, with rates in the critical stage of up to 80% causing visual neglect of the left-hand side of space.

Neglect behavior is rated by the observer on a 4-point scale: absent (0), mild (1), moderate (2), or severe (3). The average score for all rated items is multiplied by 10 to produce a total score ranging from 0 to 30.
