The original version of this rapid test -- the OraQuick Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test, manufactured by OraSure Technologies, Inc., Bethlehem , Pa. -- was approved November 7, 2002 for detection of antibody to HIV-1 in blood.

A rapid antigen/antibody test done with blood from a finger stick can usually detect HIV 18 to 90 days after exposure. An antigen/antibody lab test using blood from a vein can usually detect HIV 18 to 45 days after exposure. A nucleic acid test (NAT) can usually detect HIV 10 to 33 days after exposure.

Normal results are negative. This means that no antibodies were found and that you may not be infected with HIV. Most people who become infected with HIV will develop antibodies to the virus within 2 months. During this time, you may have HIV, but this test can't detect it.

Nucleic Acid Test (NAT) With a NAT, the health care provider will draw blood from your vein and send the sample to a lab for testing. This test can tell if a person has HIV or how much virus is present in the blood (HIV viral load test). A NAT can detect HIV sooner than other types of tests.

HIV self-tests provide results within 20 minutes. With a rapid antibody test, usually done with blood from a finger stick or with oral fluid, results are ready in 30 minutes or less. The rapid antigen/antibody test, done with blood from a finger stick, takes 30 minutes or less.

Much of that changed on March 1985, when the FDA licensed the first test to screen blood for exposure to HIV, developed by Abbott.

The virus was identified in 1984 by French and American scientists, which meant that companies could begin to develop a test for antibodies produced in response to the virus. The first test used blood and was known as an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or ELISA test. It was approved for use on March 2, 1985.
