Answer: The total hardness of water is significant because it is used to estimate the concentration of metal ions in it; the higher the concentration, the greater the risk to aquatic life and other creatures' health.

The hardness of water is estimated by simple titration of ethylene diamine tetraacetate (EDTA) solution. EDTA forms stable complexes with the metal ions present in the hard water since stability constants of calcium and magnesium complexes of EDTA are different, even the selective estimation of these ions is possible.

EDTA is ethylene diammine tetraacetic acid. The hardness of water is due to presence of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in it. These ions form stable complexes with EDTA and can be estimated by simple titration.

EDTA or Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid is commonly used as an indicator for complexometric titration because it can act as a ligand which can bind to coordinate centers which are usually metals to form colored complexes.

The full form of EDTA is ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid. As we know the hardness of water is due to the presence of Mg+2 and Ca+2 in it. They are in sulphate or carbonate forms in water. EDTA is able to form stable complexes with these ions and estimate by simple titration.

The determination of the total hardness in water is done by titration with the sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraethanoic acid (EDTA), the detection is carried out with a Cu electrode and Cu-EDTA. The sum of EDTA complexable ions is determined. The result is calculated as mmol / l.

Hardness of water is determined by titrating with a standard solution of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) which is a complexing agent. Since EDTA is insoluble in water, the disodium salt of EDTA is taken for this experiment. EDTA can form four or six coordination bonds with a metal ion.
