Herbicides may be applied only by Pesticide Applicator or Operator licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture (see pesticide licensing procedures below).

The operator is tied directly to the applicator's license. The operator cannot be licensed without an applicator being properly licensed. The operator can apply pesticides only under the direct supervision of the applicator and can apply pesticides only to areas covered by the applicator's license.

However, this exam is open book and contains 75 multiple choice questions. Additional testing is required for private applicators if they intend to use a restricted use fumigant.

Certification of commercial applicators in Indiana is a legal requirement for anyone who applies any pesticide (herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, rodenticide, etc.)

Illinois law requires that Commercial and Commercial Not-for-Hire applicators and operators pass (with a score of 70% correct or better) a written, closed book General Standards exam. Applicators must also pass one or more category exams appropriate for the sites to which they apply pesticides.

Pass one or more 50-question Category exam with a score of 35 or more correct. Category selection depends on the sites where the company uses pesticides. Watch the mail for your license application. Return the completed license application form with the appropriate fee to the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Once your application for certification is complete you will receive a letter confirming when and where you are scheduled to take the exam(s) you requested.
