The main difference is that Mathcounts sprint round has 30 questions instead of 25, and it is not multiple choice the way AMC 8 is. Those two things make Mathcounts slightly harder for the same level of problem difficulty.

Sprint Round: The Sprint Round is a 30-question calculator inactive test that students take in 40 minutes. Target Round: The Target Round is four sets of two questions apiece with six minutes to answer each set. Each question counts as one point.

Target Round Students have 6 minutes to complete each set of two problems. Students may not go back to previous rounds (or forwards to future rounds) even if they finish before time is called. Calculators are allowed for the Target Round. Usually comprised of one "confidence booster" and one hard problem.

Countdown Round Focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have a maximum of 45 seconds per problem without a calculator. This round is optional at the school, chapter and state level.

MATHCOUNTS competitions are very different from tests students take in class. For a MATHCOUNTS competition, a score of 23 out of 46 (or 50%) is absolutely fantastic! The Target Round of a MATHCOUNTS competition has four pairs of problems.

There are 4 levels in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series: school, chapter (local), state and national. Competition questions are written for students in grades 6-8.

2. Practice problems to Improve Problem Solving Intuition: MATHCOUNTS and other math contests are designed to challenge the students and require creative thinking, that's something that you can only develop with lots of practice.
