Waveguides are hollow metallic tube structures used for transmitting electromagnetic waves by reflections from inner walls. These are most commonly used at microwave frequencies. Waveguides are commonly used to feed horn antennas and parabolic dishes.

Only TE and TM modes of wave propagation are supported by rectangular waveguides. The mode of propagation with the lowest cut-off frequency is called the dominant mode. TE10 is the dominant mode in rectangular waveguides.

Here, m= number of half-wave along broad side dimension, N= number of half-wave along the shorter side. Hence in a TE11 mode, there exists one half wave of E field in both the broader and shorter dimension. Hence in a TM11 mode, there exists one half wave of H field in both the broader and shorter dimension.

A TEM mode has the electric field and the magnetic field normal to the direction of propagation. There is no component of either in the direction of propagation. Hollow rectangular waveguide has metal walls where the parallel component of the electric field has to be zero.

If m=0,n=1 or m=1,n=0 no fields are present. Hence TM01 and TM10 modes in a rectangular waveguide do not exist.
