The objective criteria defining sepsis, a minimum two-point increase,1 in the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score,4 corresponds to a mortality rate of over 10%.

What is the Sepsis Six Care bundle? The UK Sepsis Trust developed the 'Sepsis Six' – a set of six tasks including oxygen, cultures, antibiotics, fluids, lactate measurement and urine output monitoring- to be instituted within one hour by non-specialist practitioners at the frontline.

Called the quick SOFA (qSOFA) score, it includes 1 point for each of 3 criteria: (1) respiratory rate ≥ 22 breaths/min, (2) altered mental status, or (3) systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≤ 100 mm Hg. A qSOFA score ≥ 2 is suggestive of sepsis.

The SOFA score was designed as a research tool so that groups of patients (e.g., those with sepsis, and infection in the bloodstream which can lead to shock and death) could be categorized based on their risk of death. SOFA is quite accurate when used in sepsis cases and when applied to groups of patients.

Scores ranged from 0 to 24 points. The higher the score was, the more serious the sepsis related organ dysfunction was.

A SOFA score from 0 to 1 is associated with 100% survival, while a SOFA score greater than 11 is associated with 100% mortality (Table 2).
