spermatogenesis, the origin and development of the sperm cells within the male reproductive organs, the testes. The testes are composed of numerous thin tightly coiled tubules known as the seminiferous tubules; the sperm cells are produced within the walls of the tubules.

The spermatogenic cells are the cells that form mature sperms by the process of spermiogenesis. Spermatogenic cells are present inside the seminiferous tubules of the testis. The spermatogenic cells divide by mitosis, then meiosis to form gametes, which mature into sperm by the process of spermiogenesis.

As mentioned above, spermatogenesis is the process by which sperm cell production occurs; the germ cells give rise to the haploid spermatozoa. Sperm production takes place inside the seminiferous tubules, which is a convoluted cluster of tubes located inside the testes.

The process of germ cell development during spermatogenesis can be divided into five succesive stages: (1) spermatogonia, (2) primary spermatocytes, (3) secondary spermatocytes, (4) spermatids, and (5) spermatozoa.

1. Spermatogonia are diploid (46 chromosomes - 2n) stem cells that undergo mitosis to give rise to one daughter cell that remains in the basement membrane as a stem cell, and a second daughter cell (primary spermatocyte) that moves toward the tubule lumen.

A spermatogonium (plural: spermatogonia) is an undifferentiated male germ cell. Spermatogonia undergo spermatogenesis to form mature spermatozoa in the seminiferous tubules of the testis.

Spermatogonia, as well as renewing themselves, give rise to cells that lose contact with the basement membrane and commence the process of meiosis, now called primary spermatocytes.
