If you need to replace your Michigan vehicle title, apply for a duplicate title through your online Secretary of State account. Duplicate titles cost $15. If you have a lien on your vehicle, the title will be sent to your lienholder.

Also known as floating a title, the practice is illegal. A title is a record of the vehicle's ownership history kept by the state. Title jumping leaves no trace of the previous owner, leaving the buyer vulnerable if there are issues at the DMV, such as missing signatures and unpaid fees.

Michigan law defines next of kin as persons who have a relationship to the deceased, including: Legal spouse. Child over the age of 18. Parent of the deceased over the age of 18.

If you need your title sooner, instant, or same day, title service is available at all Secretary of State offices. The vehicle owner must appear in person for instant title service. You cannot appoint an agent to represent you for an instant title transaction.

Every instant title application is unique, but all persons processing a title application must present a Michigan or out-of-state photo driver license or ID card. Also, the vehicle identification number or hull identification number (for watercraft) is required for every instant title application.

The surviving spouse or legal next-of-kin may transfer the vehicle into their name by presenting the following at a Secretary of State office: The original vehicle title. A certified copy of the death certificate for the deceased. Certification from the Heir to a Vehicle form completed by the next-of-kin.

Participating financial institutions will hold the title electronically. No paper title will be printed. to transfer a vehicle to a different owner. Corrections can be done at any Secretary of State office.

Secretary of State offices accept payment by cash, check, money order, or credit or debit card (additional fees apply). You must provide proof of a valid Michigan No-Fault insurance policy to register your vehicle in Michigan.
