The fundamental counting principle helps us find the total number of possible outcomes that come from multiple events, whether we're putting an outfit together with different shirts, pants and shoes; selecting a meal with different drink, salad and entree options; or putting together any group of choices.

This principle states that the total number of outcomes of two or more independent events is the product of the number of outcomes of each individual event. For example, a child choosing among six flavors of icecreams with 3 varieties of cones will have 6 x 3 = 18 different choices of icecreams.

Examples are: When a die is rolled and penny flipped, there are 6 × 2 = 12 possible outcomes. The number of outcomes from flipping a penny 6 times is 26. The number of outcomes from rolling a pair of dice is 62.
