Every fire department, big or small, has a hierarchical structure. And, I assume, every firefighter has heard the term span of control. The span of control, in a nutshell, says you can't effectively manage more than 3-7 people.

Span of control refers to the number of individuals or resources that one supervisor can manage effectively during an incident. The optimal span of control is one supervisor to five subordinates (1:5).

Span of control is the number of personnel that one supervisor manages, usually expressed in a ratio of supervisor to subordinates. In ICS, the optimum manageable span of control falls within a ration of 1:3 to 1:7; meaning one supervisor for every three to seven subordinates.

The type of incident, nature of the task, hazards and safety factors, experience of the supervisor and subordinates, and communication access between the subordinates and the supervisor are all factors that influence manageable span of control.

Control line refers to all constructed or natural fire barriers. It's also used to describe the treated fire edges used to contain the fire. A fireline is any cleared strip or portion of a control line where flammable material has been removed by scraping or digging down to mineral soil.

Never go near the tail of helicopters. When loading helicopters in uneven terrain, always approach and depart from the down slope (lower) side and do not hold equipment overhead. Remove or secure loose articles prior to working around an operating helicopter. Do not reach up for or chase after loose objects.

Effective span of control on incidents may vary from three to seven, and a ratio of one supervisor to five reporting elements is recommended. If the number of reporting elements falls outside of these ranges, expansion or consolidation of the organization may be necessary.
