Despite their massive sizes and seeming permanence, glaciers are always on the move. Gravity pulls glacial ice downhill and causes it to deform under its own weight. As glaciers move across the landscape, erosion and deposition of soil, rock, and debris change the underlying surface.

Glacial processes are the way that glaciers shape the land through processes of weathering, erosion, transportation, and deposition. Abrasion and plucking are the two main glacial processes of erosion. They create landscapes such as erosional features such as corrie, arête, pyramidal peak, and glacial trough.

The life of a glacier couldn't be more straightforward, right? Snow accumulates at the high end of a glacier, and the ice that the snow turns into flows downhill until it melts, evaporates, or falls into the sea.

Glaciers can range in age from a couple hundred to thousands of years old. Most glaciers today are remnants of the massive ice sheets that covered Earth during the Ice Age. The Ice Age ended more than 10,000 years ago.

Although they aren't living, icebergs do have a life cycle. They begin as part of a glacier, building for tens of thousands of years and slowly moving toward the ocean. Once an iceberg calves, it typically lasts for three to six years – shorter if it floats into warmer water.

Glaciers move by a combination of (1) deformation of the ice itself and (2) motion at the glacier base. At the bottom of the glacier, ice can slide over bedrock or shear subglacial sediments.

As glaciers move they pick up rocks and debris underneath them and carry them along, eroding the landscape. Glaciers can either wear down the earth's surface or build up new landforms by depositing debris as they move.

A glacier forms when snow accumulates over time, turns to ice, and begins to flow outwards and downwards under the pressure of its own weight. In polar and high-altitude alpine regions, glaciers generally accumulate more snow in the winter than they lose in the summer from melting, evaporation, or calving.
