President James Polk claimed Mexico had “invaded our territory and shed American blood on American soil.” President James Polk began to prepare a war message to Congress on May 9, 1846, justifying hostilities with Mexico. The Mexicans, Polk noted, had refused to pay U.S. claims and refused to negotiate.

The US was unjustified in going to war because of 3 reasons: Polk provoked it, Robbery of Texas, and the growth of Slavery of Texas. One reason the US was unjustified is that Polk provoked Mexico. He was a strong believer of Manifest Destiny.

Prints & Photographs Division. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed by the United States and Mexico on February 2, 1848, ending the Mexican War and extending the boundaries of the United States by over 525,000 square miles.

On May 12, 1846, the United States Senate voted 40 to 2 to go to war with Mexico. President James K. Polk had accused Mexican troops of having attacked Americans on U.S. soil, north of the Rio Grande.
