ABC narrative recording differs from continuous recording in that only target behaviors are observed and the events that occur before and after the behavior is recorded (Cooper et al, 2007, p. 508). However, the events observed may or may not be the determining factor of the behavior.

The term “ABC” refers to the context of a behavioral event, describing events that occur before and after a behavior you want to learn more about. Professionals in the field of ABA often refer to ABC data as the 3-term contingency. The 3 terms include the antecedent (A), the behavior (B) and the consequence (C).

Use “Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence” or an ABC chart to record behavior. This involves writing down what triggered the behavior (what happened just before the behavior occurred - known as the Antecedent), the actual Behavior, and what happened afterward as a result (the Consequence).

During Observation using the ABC Recording Form Always start with recording the behavior first—be as specific as possible. Write the activity/task occurring in class. Write the Antecedent that occurs before the behavior. Write what happened right after the behavior occurred in the Consequence box.

ABC Behavior Analysis: Examples Antecedent - Driver hears seat belt warning sound. Behavior - Driver puts on seat belt. Consequence - Driver avoids a possible injury and ticket.
