Girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 (or fall semester of grade 5) and again at age 12 (or fall semester of grade 7). Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14 (or fall semester of grade 8).

The major objectives of a school scoliosis screening program are to: -. Identify students with spinal curves. - Notify parent or guardian of a child's screening failure and the need for further evaluation. - Establish follow-up procedures to ensure that each identified student will receive appropriate care.

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Spinal Screening Program was established by the Texas Legislature to detect abnormal spinal curvature in students. The program is required to adopt rules as mandated by the statute.

First, a clinician visually inspects the spine of a patient while the patient is standing upright. Next, the patient stands with feet together and bends forward at the waist with arms hanging and palms touching. The clinician repeats the visual inspection of the spine.

The purpose of scoliosis screening is to identify students with spinal deformities that may cause impairment of the body's range of motion and endurance, and in advanced stages, back pain and functions of other parts of the body.

Screening is usually done by visual inspection of the spine to look for asymmetry of the shoulders, shoulder blades, and hips. In the United States, the forward bend test is commonly used to screen for idiopathic scoliosis.

Every student is screened from the back, front, and side in a standing position and in a bent- over position to enable the screener to identify a possible spinal deformity. The sequence is planned for optimum use of time and motion. The “Postural Screening Work Sheet” (Appen- dix A) may be used to identify the results.
